Sworn Interpreting – when is it required and how does it work?

Sworn interpreting is required when you participate in an official meeting and one of the parties does not speak Polish (or another required language), and the situation has legal or formal consequences. In such cases, the presence of a sworn interpreter is not optional – it is often mandatory.

How do you know if you need a sworn interpreter?

Sworn interpreting is usually necessary when you:

  • sign documents before a notary with a foreign national,
  • participate in a court hearing or questioning,
  • handle formalities at a public office (e.g. Civil Registry Office, Voivodeship Office),
  • conclude agreements with legal consequences,
  • take part in a wedding involving a foreign citizen,
  • represent a company in formal negotiations requiring confirmed content.

If an institution informs you that a “sworn interpreter” is required, this refers to sworn interpreting.

Who is this service for?

Sworn interpreting is used by:

  • private individuals handling official matters,
  • foreigners staying in Poland,
  • companies signing agreements with international partners,
  • law firms and notary offices,
  • public institutions.

How does sworn interpreting work?

The sworn interpreter attends the meeting and translates the statements of all parties in real time. They ensure:

  • accuracy of the translation,
  • proper legal and official terminology,
  • impartiality and confidentiality,
  • formal correctness of communication.

What should be arranged before the interpreting?

To avoid misunderstandings, we agree in advance on:

  • the location and date of the meeting,
  • the language combination,
  • the nature of the meeting (e.g. notary, court, office),
  • the expected duration,
  • any documents or materials for preparation.

Thanks to this, the interpreter is properly prepared, and the entire meeting runs smoothly without the risk of formal errors.
